It all started well enough with the MINISTOX. Once again the happy chappy, by the name of Wrennall, Lee Wrennall, # 343, dominated the day winning the heats, final and getting a second in the Grand National. Not that I am saying the minis were boring, far from it. Heat one and spins for Stuntman # 232 Josh Quinlan and # 28 Michael Williamson, #928 Ste Dodd's led the first few laps in what was an impressive drive, but highlight of the race was the scrap between #161 Nick Hyphenated and # 3 the Saint. Saint was on form in heat two nudging past many, as was his younger brother # 93 Sam Twist. Stuntman span and Ste Dodd's ripped off part of his car as he hit the wall hard. I turned marshal in the final as first of # 928 Ste Dodd's span at my corner, and was in a dodgy place. I kept an eye on him as he was joined by #232 Spinner Quinlan and # 93 Little Saint, all three looking like they had paralleled parked at ASDA. #223 Josie Schofeild hit the outer wall a few times and # 40 Jonathan Croad hit it hard and took off for a second. Josie & Little Saint both failed to finish the Grand National, but Spinner Quinlan kept the crowds entertained.. Yep It was a good Ministox meeting all in all. Another thing I remember was, not sure which race, but Josie stooping for an age near us, getting belted up the rear by another car then driving off like nothing was wrong, it was all very bizarre..
Next up was the WARTON STOCK CARS. Heat one was a nudge & spin affair and I noticed, for the first time # 880 Ant (little whan) Kerr out in a Stock Car. Last time I saw him was at Buxton stood next to his upturned Metro. The second heat had three restarts, the first caused by a smash between, amongst many, # 147 and # 912 Les Helme. The restart was short lived as Young Whan Kerr span at the corner exit. Third restart was after a wheel was shod by an errant driver. At the same time # 4 Billy Parkinson and # 11 got together. The Final was marred by a Mr Duckett hitting the pit gate hard and the Grand National saw # 65 Nathan Lawson strip a bolt holding in his suspension after climbing over a span car. #342 Dan Wrennall, also got stuck behind them for a while. # 5 Jonathan Clarkson and # 102 Dean Simpson had an almighty scrap ending with Jonathan leaping over the front of Deans car on the cool down lap.
The UNLIMITED MINIS were on top form again, # 309 Angela Fryer was on a flyer again most of the day but Bad Newz banger team mates # 62 David Eccles and # 44 Ste Smith battling from start to finish. The first heat was delayed as we waited for # 307 Liz Newby to sort out a problem. Ste Smith had a major problem in the heat, by spinning in a Ralph Schumacher style to last but fighting back to get a second place. The second heat saw nip and tuck action for the lead with DE getting it. It was even more intense in the final with the lead changing almost every half lap. Once again it was DE got the win making it a clean sweep.
The SUPER BANGERS too were dominated by a single driver, # 439 Rodder Kellett won the heats and the final, but not the Grand national, as it has been scrapped cause Jay is to quick. Needless to say I don't think that he will not win this years championship ?? I mean I think the championship is his, done & dusted. The others had fun too though, well when I say fun I mean some had fun. # 21 Simon Varley span out on the last lap of heat one. He went out in heat two, neither did # 772 Alan Molloy. # 944 Tam Cavanagh lost a wheel, right in front of # 802 Graeme Black, who masterfully avoided it. Tam's suspension let him down again in the final. Though it was not all bad for the Varleys as # 9 Phil got a second.
BANGER CARAVANS and 15 came out to play. As is the norm, it was a short race, # 41 Dan Steele, with the smallest van, won, as he was only car to do two laps with his caravan attached. The destruction was near enough total, the pit bend was a mess of wood, cars and fibreglass. A certain Scouser ended up in his Volvo Estate, inside a caravan poking into another one. Bones was put on top of the wall and one car ended up BEHIND his caravan, though he had no idea how that happened! # 491 John Mason and his hearse were in the middle of the carnage. Though it was short it was very sweet and I trust they will return again next year.
BANGERS started well with hard hitting and a Warton Crush in the first heat, # 170 Gavin 'Bad Newz' Howard was the receiver of the biggest hit of the race, that said he still drove off the track and returned later in the day! # 157 Barry Greenhalgh was wasted into the pit wall and in the second heat # 270 Dean Leek (Bad Newz) was jacked by # 118 (got your number), the granny limo from the caravan race! # 501 Ste 'Basher' Kaye, another caravan racer, took on two of the TNT krew, # 97 Baz Kitchen and # 291 Jason Hewitt. # 491 John Mason finally killed the hearse. The Grannie, got your number, limo was bent in two places in the final, though in the banger mechanics race, # 61 David Gawn was lucky to live after being in a Sierra that was totally destroyed in the far corner wall by # 5 Carlos Perez. It took an age to free Yip Yap, Dave's' nickname, and he was carted of to hospital for treatment and ops on a broken knee and ligament damage. I, and I am sure you, wish him well for a speedy recovery. Other drivers were saying that Sierras do bend in a nasty way, but all agreed they should not be banned. The conversation moved on as to what was going to be raced in future years, with Volvos, Nissan Bluebirds and, with reservations, Focus and Bravos.. Sounds interesting.
