The WARTON STOCK CARS had a new car to ogle at, the car was the latest from the Lord camp. # 777 Jack 'book em Danno' Lord had a fantastic looking REAR ENGINED tiny beastie. The engine is a 1000cc Honda one and, sadly, it blew its driveshaft in the first heat.. Still the rest of this season can be used to iron out the niggles ready for the start of the 2004 challenge. More doom and gloom in this heat for # 251 Gareth O'Beirne and # 67 Peter Fawcett, who tangled on the the far corner. They had lasted longer than # 86 and # 245 Jonny Preston, who crashed on the first lap. In fact # 86 had a bad day, well it went from bad to worse.. It involved # 134 Alex Chapman who seems to have come to grips with the stock car now, the ex Jack Lord one, Alex won heat one and was leading the final by a huge margin when # 86 rejoined in front of him after an incident. the two got tangled and when Alex finally broke free and resumed the race, but Alex got too carried away and climbed, nay jumped, over another shocked driver, two laps down. # 86 survived to race in the Grand National, but span and was climbed by # 932 Philip Wells. Both were out. That said the bad luck seemed to greet # 212 Ian Maher who, in heat two, just seemed to loose power. This heat was also not good for Alex, # 5 Jonathan Clarkson and # 112 Brian Miller, all of whom ended up watching from the infield. # 251 Gareth O'Beirne, # 102 Dean Simpson and # 5 Jonathan Clarkson all, along with Alex, got wins.
The SUPER BANGERS were without # 439 Jay Kellett, but that was not noticeable as every heat was utter chaos and carnage. Heat one, # 839 the Astra, was out after ripping off the front suspension, # 19 Michael Bell span from first to last and # 964 Anthony Whittaker was out after hitting, or being hit by, # 772 Alan (Birthday Boy) Molloy. # 274 David Christopher went out in heat two after a tangle, he was not alone many failed to reach the end. I thought dummies were going to be spat out as # 19 Michael Bell gave hand signals to a nudging # 944 Tam Cavanagh, what I didn't realise was the fact that Michael was in the lead and another hand gesture as he took the win told me he was extremely happy, in fact even happier than a fat kid eating cake! Sadly it was not all fun and laughter in the final, Alan Molloy went off in a cloud of dust & smoke and the ill fated Astra hit the start finish marshals post and crabbed on for about ten foot before expiring. In a blast for the lead in the Grand National # 100 Ann Potts and # 9 Phil Varley got in an embrace and ended up a lap down on everyone else. In fact # 200 David Rainford in David Christopher's old car had a better day even getting a win and a few thirds !!
The UNLIMITED MINIS were down to five cars today, as some drivers were in bangers and Ste Smiths Mini would not start. So it was clutch starts and 8 lap races for these lot. # 62 David Eccles won every race with # 25 Andy Yeats getting seconds and the third places shared between # 125 Wayne Palmer and the ever improving # 309 Angela Fryer, she had a bit of a crash in the second heat, but after the race finished just drove off!! It was a bit odd.. She also had a great scrap for forth place with # 132 Paul Postlethwaite, which ended up as third spot as Wayne's car died toward the end of the race.
The BANGERS had another good day. Though low in numbers, there were plenty of hits and wars to see. Heat one and a red flag after # 286 Michael lee panicked in his wrecked car, not that I blame him at all. After the restart there were plenty of spins and a few hits, # 41 Dan Steele, in a Crappi, got stuck in, causing a wrecking train with # 270 Gavin Howard of Bad Newz, # 514 Paul Woods and the wreck of # 286.# 247 Lee Edge got a minor jacking from # 270 and our fave Fat Daz, went out early, in a return to his regular form. # 507 caught fire. Indeed it was an hectic race. Heat two and Dan Steele was flying, spinning off a car a lap on the start finish straight. Dan then got span by a Bad Newz car and T-Boned by # 62 David Eccles on the drivers door, Dan carried on, Dave got black flagged. # 76 Martin Chadwick took himself out of the race and things started to look up for the final. we were not disappointed... Bad Newz car # 170 blasted the Volvo of # 696 Karl Bradshaw, into the wall. Karl's car took off and # 170 ended up under him. The Band News car of # 217 Derek Moon, got up against the wall and Dan Steele blasted into him at full pelt, reversed and drove off. Dan span # 286 and we waited for the fun in the mechanics and DD. The BIGGEST cheer of the day was in the Mechs race, when Bad Newz car # 170 went the wrong way to do a head on with Dan Steele, though Dan avoided him and the car of Dave Eccles, now driven by Ste Smith, went headlong into his team mate. Stes Capri was a bit wrecked, but Dan drove round the track and pummelled him over & over and over. The Dan went on to on the hunt again. He soon spied # 525, who had a very odd looking, misaligned rear end. It didn't stop these two having a few little head ons, they were the joined by # 190 who took on Dan from behind. These three battled on for a while until the win was given. That said I, for one, cannot wait for the rematch from the young upstarts that are Bad Newz and the regal Dan Steele and hopefully Deano too.. Should be fun :)
